World War One, first day of the Battle of the Somme MC, reverse engraved CYRIL JOHN HUNTRISS 1ST BATTN EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT SEP 6TH 1915, cased Cyril John Huntriss born in January 1893 and resided in Scarborough, Yorkshire educated at Uppingham School and served in France from 26 January 1915 with the 1st Battalion Mentioned in Despatches London Gazette 1 January 1916 by FM Sir John French, Military Cross London Gazette, 6 September 1915, 'For conspicuous gallantry as Battalion Grenadier Officer on 9 August 1915 at HOOGE. He led four bombing parties up to the assault on the enemy's position with the greatest coolness and daring'. Killed in action First Day of the great Somme offensive 1 July 1916 an eyewitness of his B Company recalls 'on Saturday 1st July 1916 at 8am Captain Huntriss was killed when advancing from the British to the German trenches'. Aged 23, he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. Estimate: 300-500
