The family story is that he changes his name to Thomas Robert Wilson to join the army, under age and against parental consent.
In 1860 he was discharged as being medically unfit (valvular disease of the heart). He then went to live in Ireland, and two children are known to have been born there. More children were born in ENgland, but the date of arrival in England is not known,
